It Was Never the Plan
My name is Sergey Trifonov, and to be completely honest, becoming a photographer was never part of the plan.
I first picked up a camera in London in 2012. Back then, photography was simply a hobby — a way to preserve the people, places and moments I encountered along the way. But it did not take me long to realise that beautiful images alone were not what interested me most.
People were.
That was more than thirteen years ago.
Since then, I have lived in England, the United States, Malta, Norway, Finland, Kyiv and Saint Petersburg. Although I have been a Lithuanian citizen since childhood, I have always been drawn to unfamiliar places. Curiosity was probably behind most of those journeys. Although at times, they felt less like travelling and more like an intensive course called Life Will Teach You Something Eventually.
Spoiler: it did…
Every place left something behind: new friends, new habits, new perspectives and countless human stories. I watched people start over, build careers, create families, go through difficult periods and find happiness in the most ordinary things.
Perhaps that is why I am not particularly interested in perfect poses or carefully rehearsed smiles.
I would much rather understand the person standing in front of my camera.
What matters to them. What inspires them. What they create. What they love.
What they dream about.
That is why my photoshoots rarely begin with the words, “Stand right there.”
They usually begin with a conversation.
I genuinely believe that great photography is not about perfect people. It is about real people. And those are the photographs that become more valuable with time.
Today, I work as a wedding photographer in Vilnius, creating business portraits and personal branding photography, as well as photographing corporate events, conferences and people who genuinely care about what they do. Every new project is an opportunity to tell another story — not simply to produce a collection of beautiful images.
A few years ago, one of my personal photography projects attracted considerable attention in Lithuania. It resulted in a solo exhibition that sparked a strong public response. The project was covered by some of the country’s largest news outlets, and I was invited to speak about it on Radio R. The experience reminded me once again that photography can do more than preserve memories. It can also begin a conversation.
Over the years, I have photographed an incredibly wide range of people: Hollywood actors, internationally recognized athletes, prominent Lithuanian politicians, entrepreneurs, musicians and people whose names will never appear in the news.
And do you know what?
In front of the camera, there is very little difference between them.
Everyone feels a little nervous.
Everyone wants to look like themselves.
And everyone deserves photographs in which they recognise themselves.
At this point, you may be wondering: “Are we allowed to joke during the shoot?”
Absolutely.
Sometimes a good joke helps someone relax far more quickly than ten pieces of posing advice ever could.
